Development of new biotechnologies of metal containing sewage treatment on the basis of extremophilic (including Antarctic) microorganisms. PDF Print E-mail

We extracted microorganisms resistant to high concentrations of heavy metals from Antarctic ecosystems (Argentina Archipelago). Some of them grow in 200-500 mg/l Hg2+, 200-500 mg/l Cd2+, 1000-3000 mg/l Cu2+ and CrO42- environment. We demonstrated absence of correlation between microbial resistance to high metal concentrations and content r of these metals in Antarctic soils. We also defined the basic mechanisms of Antarctic microorganisms interaction with soluble and insoluble copper compounds, namely, Cu(I) reduction to insoluble compounds, Cu2+ fixation by metalthioneins and complex compounds of Cu2+ and organic acids formation. Our research shows that the ability of Antarctic microorganisms to interact with toxic heavy metal compounds (Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and CrO42-) may be used effectively in industrial biotechnologies, such as soluble metal r compounds extracting from industrial sewages and their obtaining from exhausted mines  and terraces.
